The lower 99’s concept is heavily influenced by a variety of Post-Bop sounds, such as the Hard bop era of the 60s with composers such as Cedar Walton and Charles Mingus, as well as 90s-2000s Neo-Soul and Rnb-Jazz fusion pioneered by musicians such as Roy Hargrove.

Javi Vasquez

Saxophone/Aerophone

Javier Vasquez is a third generation musician with experience in Jazz, Commercial, and classical performance. Born and raised in Austin Texas, he was surrounded by music such as blues, rock and pop where his interest in music emerged. His professional music journey started within the established University of North Texas where Javi performed with numerous jazz big bands and contemporary ensembles. He continued his journey in San Marcos studying with the elusive Joel Frahm where he shaped his sound into a multi-genre soundscape. Javi continues to perform in the Centeral Texas area.

Parker powers

Parker Powers is a trumpet player currently in the Texas State University jazz program. In his 3 years at Texas State University, Parker has studied with highly esteemed musicians such as, Tito Carrillo, Joel Frahm, and Carter Arrington. Born and raised in Austin Texas, Parker was immersed in the live music culture of the city through Blues, Neo soul, Funk, and hip hop. This would go on to guide how he learned jazz and influence how he plays within the jazz tradition. Parker has played many different genres all throughout Texas, as well as a few cities across America. This includes Austin TX, Dallas TX, Houston TX, Indianapolis IN, Kansas City MO, and New Orleans LA.
